Based on surveys of 29,000 online shoppers and 5,800 ecommerce businesses, the report finds that growth will depend less on adding new channels and more on fixing the friction that keeps customers from completing purchases.Delivery and returns remain among the biggest pressure points. DHL found that 7 in 10 shoppers will not buy from a brand if they do not trust the delivery or returns provider. The same share will abandon a cart when the delivery or returns options at checkout do not meet their expectations.The report also highlights rising demand for cross-border shopping, sustainable options, out-of-home delivery, and AI-supported experiences. The bottom line, however, is that trust remains the deciding factor.Standout statistics from the survey include:50% of shoppers want logistics providers to prioritize same-day or faster delivery over the next five years.62% of shoppers abandon carts when their preferred payment method is not accepted.45% of shoppers buy internationally more than once a month, and international shopping is up 10% year over year.35% of shoppers have abandoned an online purchase because sustainability credentials were missing.31% of shoppers already use AI-powered chat tools frequently when shopping online, whileAs ecommerce becomes more global and more technology-driven, the brands best positioned for growth will be those that make checkout, delivery, and returns feel reliable from order to delivery.Prime Day Starts Early as Walmart Pushes Brands into a Longer Deal SeasonPrime Day is more than a four-day sprint this year. Amazon has already opened early Prime Day deals ahead of its June 23–26 event,2 giving shoppers more time to browse, compare prices, and build carts before the main event begins. This creates a longer runway for brands, but also a more demanding one.Amazon is leaning heavily into engagement this year, with early offers, Prime-exclusive savings, Alexa-powered deal alerts, personalized recommendations, and daily “Today’s Big Deals” promotions throughout the event. The strategy encourages shoppers to start browsing earlier and return frequently as new deals are released.Walmart is moving just as aggressively. Walmart Deals will run June 22–28,3 overlapping Prime Day and giving Walmart+ members 24 hours of early access to select online products.4 The sale will be available online, in the app, and in stores.The competition raises the stakes around inventory positioning, marketplace readiness, fulfillment speed, and pricing consistency. Peak-style pressure is arriving earlier in the summer calendar, and the brands that win will be ready before the biggest traffic days hit.Amazon Expands LTL Freight Access as Logistics Ambitions GrowAmazon is opening its less-than-truckload freight service to all businesses, extending Amazon Supply Chain Services further into the B2B logistics market.5 The new LTL offering supports shipments from 150 to 15,000 pounds and gives shippers access to same-day or next-day pickup, real-time tracking, digital booking, and nationwide service.The launch builds on Amazon’s May rollout of Amazon Supply Chain Services, which opened more of its capabilities to companies beyond Amazon sellers. The LTL expansion moves Amazon from an inbound-only use case into a broader freight network open to businesses shipping outside Amazon’s own facilities.6Amazon’s move opens another major option in a freight market where cost, reliability, visibility, and capacity remain difficult to balance. It also raises the competitive bar for logistics partners. As Amazon pushes deeper into freight, brands will have more carrier choices. Still, they will also need a sharper transportation strategy to determine where Amazon fits alongside existing parcel, LTL, and fulfillment relationships.Ulta Beauty Bets on Experiential Retail with Times Square FlagshipUlta Beauty is planning an experiential Times Square store for 2027,7 marking a bigger push into one of retail’s most visible physical markets. The location will focus on events, customer experience, brand activations, technology, entertainment, convenience, and Ulta’s broad assortment. In a quarterly earnings call, CEO and president Kecia Steelman said the flagship will also create new marketing opportunities through digital billboards and stronger storytelling.The strategy comes as Ulta expands beyond traditional stores and delves into discovery. On the company’s call, Steelman also pointed to a new fulfillment center in Salt Lake City, AI investments, same-day delivery, and TikTok Shop as part of the retailer’s broader growth strategy.Ulta’s new store shows how essential physical location is to the beauty industry, helping to drive awareness, loyalty, and trial. The store gives Ulta a higher-profile stage for exclusive brands and in-person experiences while helping it compete in a New York market where Sephora has a larger footprint.Walmart and Wing Add More Markets as Drone Delivery Moves Past the Pilot PhaseWalmart and Wing are expanding drone delivery to seven additional metro areas, with plans to begin operations in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, Salt Lake City, and Memphis by 2027.8 The expansion builds on Walmart’s broader goal to create more than 270 drone delivery locations and reach more than 40 million Americans.The announcement comes shortly after Walmart said it had completed 1 million drone deliveries, a milestone that points to changing customer behavior. What began as a novelty for small convenience items is becoming part of Walmart’s fast delivery strategy, especially for urgent orders that can reach customers in about 30 minutes.9The growing adoption of drone delivery continues to demonstrate that speed is becoming more segmented. Not every product fits the model, but lightweight essentials, beauty items, supplements, accessories, and small replenishment orders could benefit as coverage expands. This creates the need for fulfillment strategies that are more tied to channel, product profile, and customer urgency.Father’s Day Spending Set to Hit Record as Shoppers Prioritize Meaningful GiftsFather’s Day spending is expected to reach a record $24 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.10 The total is up from $22.4 billion last year and ahead of the previous $22.9 billion record set in 2023.The survey found that 76% of consumers plan to celebrate Father’s Day, with average spending projected at $199.38 per person. Greeting cards remain the most popular purchase, followed by clothing, special outings, gift cards, and personal care items.The record forecast shows the continued strength of occasion-based shopping even as consumers remain selective. Father’s Day may not carry the scale of the winter peak.
