So, it’s not surprising that ChatGPT has forged a new partnership with Shopify that allows people to search and shop directly through the platform.Think of it like this: Chat-driven commerce that lets consumers discover, research, and purchase through a “chat.”With AI-powered consumer experiences already in play (think Rufus, Google Assistant, or platforms like Rep AI), it’s a powerful channel that fits the rising trend of AI and its use in commerce.Discovery, research, and purchase: all in one placeThe integration is simple. Shopify can connect with OpenAI in just a few clicks. The new integration lets shoppers discover and buy products without redirects or carts. In short, customers search, explore the product, and purchase directly inside ChatGPT.As ChatGPT puts it: “It’s a natural extension of how people already use AI: to plan, research, and make better decisions. What begins as a question (What’s a good travel bag for a weekend trip?) can now instantly turn into a purchase. With Shopify’s product data powering ChatGPT’s responses, millions of items from brands like Glossier, Vuori, Away, and Steve Madden are just a few prompts away.”The appeal is huge. It’s an ecommerce convenience that lets people make instant, contextual, personalized purchases in one place.Why the ChatGPT – Shopify integration matters for brandsAlthough the integration announcement means another sales channel, it also transforms how discovery occurs. Think about it: no relying on search engines, paid ads, or social feeds.Consumers have already turned to conversational AI to guide purchasing decisions. But now brands can appear organically in moments of intent. When a shopper is actively looking, either for a specific type of product or a gift, on-target recommendations are made immediately. With more than 700 million weekly users, ChatGPT is rapidly becoming the go-to destination for product discovery. Early adopters of Instant Checkout may benefit from lower competition and high-intent shoppers while the channel is still new.The downside: margin pressure and uncertaintyThe 4% fee raises real questions about profitability, especially for brands with tight margins or high fulfillment costs. When combined with Shopify’s standard payment fees, total transaction costs for agentic commerce can exceed 7%.
