Your bi-weekly roundup of ecommerce trends, retail shifts, and fulfillment innovation.
Holiday shopping is already stretching well beyond its traditional November start. Adobe expects U.S. consumers to spend nearly $96 billion online in October before another record ecommerce season begins, while AI referrals and mobile purchasing continue to change how shoppers reach checkout.
TikTok Shop has struck an exclusive deal with UPS to bring box-free, label-free returns to sellers and shoppers. Nordstrom, meanwhile, is exploring seven-day delivery as retailers continue to narrow the gap between an online order and the doorstep.
Physical retail has its own pressures. New Capital One Shopping research estimates nearly $50 billion in retail theft losses this year, forcing stores to balance protection with the experience customers encounter on the sales floor. David’s Bridal is taking a different approach to experience, extending its relationship with customers into wedding planning and vendor connections through its Pearl platform.
Heading into peak, retail sales remain positive, but August’s gains were modest. That mix of steady demand and an earlier holiday calendar gives retailers little room to wait until November to put seasonal plans into motion.

Adobe expects holiday ecommerce to reach $275 billion as October gains importance
U.S. online holiday spending is expected to reach a record $275.1 billion between November 1 and December 31, up 6.7% from last year, according to Adobe.1 Cyber Week alone is forecast to generate $47.5 billion, with Cyber Monday topping $15 billion and Black Friday reaching $12.9 billion.
The more important timing shift may happen before November. Adobe expects consumers to spend $95.8 billion online during October, an 8% increase from 2025. Nearly $10 billion of that is expected during the October 6–7 Prime Day event as promotions spread across retailers beyond Amazon.
The earlier shopping trend creates another significant demand period before the traditional holiday peak is fully underway. Inventory positioned for late November may already be needed weeks earlier, particularly when major promotions pull purchases forward.
The way consumers reach those products is changing too. Adobe forecasts traffic to U.S. retail sites from shopping through AI-powered chat and browser tools will rise 130% year over year during the holiday season. Mobile is expected to account for 57.4% of total online holiday spending.
Peak season is becoming less concentrated around a handful of late-November dates. Waves of demand from October promotions, Cyber Week, and December mean fulfillment operations must be prepared to support a longer period.
TikTok Shop brings box-free returns to nearly 10,000 locations
TikTok Shop has signed an exclusive partnership with UPS to offer box-free, label-free returns through Happy Returns, adding another piece of logistics infrastructure behind social commerce.2 3 4 Shoppers can take eligible returns to nearly 10,000 Return Bar locations inside businesses, including The UPS Store, Staples, and Ulta Beauty.
The service is available to participating TikTok Shop sellers whether they fulfill orders themselves or use TikTok Shop fulfillment. Returned products are scanned at the drop-off point and consolidated before moving to processing facilities rather than traveling individually through the parcel network.
Reuters reports that nearly 20% of online sales are returned, while returns management company Blue Yonder estimates the cost of processing a return averages 27% of the original purchase price.2
TikTok Shop has spent much of its growth story focused on making product discovery and checkout happen within the same platform. Easier returns address what happens after purchases arrive.
The appeal for brands is faster processing that returns sellable inventory to circulation. Happy Returns also says its technology screens returns for potential fraud. That makes reverse logistics another area where TikTok Shop is building infrastructure around its marketplace rather than leaving the entire post-purchase experience to individual sellers.
Retail theft losses approach $50 billion as stores rethink protection
U.S. retailers are expected to lose $49.8 billion to external retail theft in 2026,5 according to an updated analysis from Capital One Shopping. That follows an estimated $47.8 billion in losses during 2025, even as the total number of shoplifting incidents declined.
The numbers show why retail theft remains a major operational issue even when incident counts move in the right direction. Nearly half of retailers reported more individual shoplifting events in 2025 than the year before, while 53% reported more incidents involving groups of shoplifters.
Loss prevention is also changing stores themselves. Capital One reports that 70% of multi-location retailers use locked cases, cages, or hooks in at least some locations. Sixty-five percent have removed certain products from sales floors to reduce theft exposure, and 20% reported closing store locations in response to retail theft during 2024.
Those measures solve one problem while potentially creating another. Physical stores are being asked to deliver convenience and discovery while retailers restrict access to some of the merchandise shoppers came to see.
Theft affects more than shrink calculations. It can also influence assortment decisions, store labor, merchandising, and how easily a customer can complete what would otherwise be a straightforward purchase.

David’s Bridal expands the retail relationship beyond the dress
David’s Bridal is continuing its move from bridal retailer toward a broader wedding platform with Pearl Connect, a new AI-supported service designed to connect couples with wedding professionals throughout the planning process.6
Pearl Connect builds on the company’s Pearl Planner platform. Planning information a couple has already provided, such as their budget and wedding preferences, can carry into conversations with vendors rather than forcing customers to restart the discovery process each time. The platform also brings communication and scheduling into the same environment.
David’s says it has visibility into nearly 90% of U.S. brides, giving the company a substantial pool of first-party information about where customers are in their wedding journey.
The launch shows one strategy physical retail can use to remain relevant without depending entirely on additional store transactions. A wedding dress may represent a relatively infrequent purchase, but the event around it creates months of other decisions.
David’s uses the extended timeline to stay involved after the initial retail interaction. That approach may be particularly valuable for categories built around milestones or projects, where the product purchase is only one piece of a larger customer experience.
Nordstrom looks to seven-day delivery as the weekend gap narrows
Nordstrom is exploring seven-day-a-week delivery as part of its effort to shorten the time between online checkout and customer receipt.7 The retailer has also recently piloted same-day delivery in Los Angeles.
Weekend delivery addresses a less obvious source of ecommerce delay. A customer ordering late in the week can see an otherwise competitive fulfillment timeline stretch when parts of the delivery network operate differently on Saturday or Sunday.
Expanding that schedule would effectively give Nordstrom two additional delivery days without requiring customers to choose a separate expedited service. It also reflects how the definition of fast delivery continues to move. Two-day shipping once represented a major ecommerce advantage. Larger retailers are now experimenting with same-day delivery windows, and ultrafast delivery, measured in hours.
Nordstrom’s strategy does not need to match ultrafast grocery or marketplace delivery to benefit from that change. Fashion orders have different purchase patterns, but customers still compare the delivery promise they see at checkout with what they experience elsewhere online.
Seven-day delivery within fulfillment networks also changes the operating calendar behind that promise. Order processing, carrier pickups, inventory availability, and staffing must consistently support the extra delivery days for weekend service to become a dependable customer expectation.
Retail sales extend their growth streak heading into holiday
U.S. retail sales grew for an 11th consecutive month in August, although the latest gain was relatively modest. Core retail sales increased 0.17% from July and 3.47% from a year earlier, according to the CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor.8
The measure excludes autos, gasoline, and restaurants to provide a clearer view of retail goods spending. Unlike government estimates, the Retail Monitor is built from anonymized credit and debit card transaction data.
The continued year-over-year increase provides a reasonably firm starting point as retailers enter the final quarter. Still, the monthly figure suggests consumers are not accelerating spending across the board. That fits with a holiday environment likely to depend heavily on promotions and carefully timed purchases.
Adobe’s forecast adds another piece to that picture. Online sales are expected to grow faster than overall retail, with October making up a larger share of seasonal spending. A consumer who remains willing to buy but responds strongly to discounts can create concentrated spikes around promotional events rather than smooth demand across the quarter.
Retail sales could remain healthy while individual weeks, products, and channels vary far more, creating a more complicated inventory and peak fulfillment planning environment heading into the holidays.
